Psalms 34:20

Listen to this article

“He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken.”

Context: Psalm 34 is a psalm of praise and thanksgiving written by David when he was in distress and pretending to be insane before Abimelech, the king of Gath. In this psalm, David encourages the righteous to trust in God and highlights the Lord’s faithfulness in delivering His people.

Symbolic Meaning: The verse in question, Psalm 34:20, is often understood as a Messianic prophecy, fulfilled in Jesus Christ. It speaks of God’s protection over the righteous, promising that not a single bone of the righteous person would be broken.

Fulfillment in Jesus Christ: The New Testament refers to this verse in relation to Jesus’ crucifixion. In John 19:36, during the crucifixion scene, it is mentioned that none of Jesus’ bones were broken. This fulfillment demonstrates that Jesus is the righteous one whom God protects, even in His suffering and death.

Importance of the Unbroken Bones: In the context of Jesus’ crucifixion, the fact that none of His bones were broken carries significant symbolism. In Jewish law, the Passover lamb was to be sacrificed without any broken bones (Exodus 12:46). Jesus, as the ultimate Passover Lamb, fulfils this requirement, further emphasising His role as the sacrificial Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world (John 1:29).

Spiritual Application: Beyond the Messianic prophecy and fulfillment, there is also a spiritual application for believers today. The promise that God keeps all the bones of the righteous points to God’s care and protection over His people. It reminds us that even in times of trial, God is with us, guarding and preserving us.

Trust in God’s Protection: As we face challenges, we can find comfort and strength in knowing that God is our protector. Just as He watched over Jesus and preserved His bones, He watches over His children and guards them from harm. We can trust in His faithfulness and rely on His promises.

Encouragement to the Righteous: Psalm 34:20 serves as an encouragement to the righteous to remain steadfast in their faith. It assures us that God is aware of our circumstances and is actively involved in protecting and preserving us. We can find solace in His loving care, knowing that He will never abandon us.
