Though hee fall, he shall not be vtterly cast downe: for the Lord vpholdeth him with his hand. Psalms 37:24 (KJV)

Psalm 37 is a wisdom psalm attributed to David. It offers wisdom and encouragement to the righteous in times of distress, assuring them of God’s faithfulness and justice. Unlike some other psalms, it is not an acrostic poem and does not follow an alphabetical structure.

The overarching message of this psalm is that the righteous should not be discouraged by the temporary prosperity of the wicked. It encourages trust in God’s guidance and faithfulness, assuring that God will ultimately establish justice and bless the righteous.

Understanding Psalm 37: 24:

  • “Though he fall”: This phrase refers to the righteous person stumbling or experiencing difficulties in life. It acknowledges that even the righteous can face challenges, setbacks, or even temporary defeat.
  • “He shall not be utterly cast down”: Here the psalmist assures the reader that despite the challenges and falls, the righteous will not be permanently destroyed or abandoned by God. The Hebrew word for “utterly cast down” implies being completely forsaken.
  • “For the LORD upholdeth him with his hand”: The psalmist emphasizes God’s active involvement in the life of the righteous. The Lord upholds and supports them with His hand, offering protection, guidance, and strength. This verse conveys the idea that God is intimately involved in the lives of those who trust in Him, providing assistance and preventing their ultimate downfall.

Application and Encouragement:

  • Trust in God’s faithfulness: This verse reminds believers to rely on God’s steadfast love even amid challenges, knowing He will not abandon the righteous.
  • Perseverance through trials: Recognizing that falls may come, the passage offers hope to press on, confident that God will sustain and uphold the faithful.
  • Assurance of ultimate victory: Temporary defeats do not define the final outcome; God’s sustaining power guarantees that the righteous will ultimately overcome.

In summary, Psalm 37:24 encourages the righteous to place their confidence in God’s faithful support. Though they may stumble, they will not be utterly cast down because the Lord upholds them with His hand, providing hope, perseverance, and the assurance of ultimate victory.
