Luke 21 records the teachings of Jesus as He observes people giving their offerings at the temple. Jesus emphasizes the value of one’s heart and intention behind their giving, rather than the amount itself. He foretells the destruction of the temple and warns His disciples about false messiahs, wars, and natural disasters that will occur before the end times.
Jesus then speaks about the persecution His followers will face for their faith, assuring them that He will give them the wisdom and words to defend themselves. He advises them to remain steadfast and not to worry about what to say when brought before authorities.
Continuing His discourse, Jesus predicts the signs in the heavens and the distress of nations before His return. He compares these signs to the budding of a fig tree, indicating that when these events happen, the end is near. Jesus assures His disciples that His words will not pass away and advises them to be watchful and prayerful, always ready for His coming.
As the chapter concludes, Jesus teaches in the temple daily while people gather to hear Him. He warns against hypocrisy among the religious leaders and highlights the poor widow who, despite her poverty, offers her whole livelihood to God. Jesus marvels at her selfless act, affirming that she has given more than the wealthy who gave only a fraction of their wealth.
