Luke 21:37

And in the day time he was teaching in the temple; and at night he went out, and abode in the mount that is called the mount of Olives.

Luke 21:37 (KJV)

Luke 21 records Jesus’ teaching on the signs of the end times, including the destruction of the temple and the signs of His second coming. In this verse, Luke provides a glimpse into Jesus’ daily routine during His final week in Jerusalem. The verse is a hinge between His public ministry and His private withdrawal, showing both His faithful teaching and His pattern of seeking solitude and prayer.

Jesus spent His days teaching in the temple, the centre of Jewish religious life and a place of worship and instruction. He used this opportunity to share His teachings, confront religious leaders, and reach out to the people with the message of the Kingdom of God. At night, He went out and lodged on the mount of Olives, a mountain ridge east of Jerusalem across the Kidron Valley, known for its olive trees. This was not a retreat from His mission but a continuation of His dependence on the Father. The rhythm of public service and private devotion shows His complete dedication to God’s will, with no part of His day reserved for personal comfort.

The mount of Olives was a place Jesus frequented with His disciples, and His practice of lodging there is consistent with the Gospel account of His prayer in Gethsemane, which was located on that mount (Luke 22:39). His willingness to stay outside the city’s walls also foreshadows His crucifixion outside Jerusalem (Hebrews 13:12-13).

  • Commitment to Teaching: Jesus’ commitment to teaching is evident in this verse. Despite opposition and challenges, He diligently taught the people about the Kingdom of God. As followers of Christ, we are also called to teach and share the Gospel, making disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19-20). We should prioritise sharing the truth of God’s Word and investing time in teaching others.

  • Finding Solitude and Prayer: Jesus often withdrew to secluded places to pray and seek fellowship with the Father. The mount of Olives became a place of rest and rejuvenation for Him. In our busy lives, it is essential to find moments of solitude to seek God’s presence, pray, and recharge spiritually. By spending time alone with God, we can gain clarity, strength, and direction.

  • Balancing Ministry and Personal Life: Jesus’ example teaches the importance of maintaining a balance between ministry and personal well-being. He tirelessly served the people during the day but also made intentional time for rest. It is crucial to prioritise self-care, including physical and emotional rest, to avoid burnout and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

  • Trusting God’s Plan: Jesus knew that His time on earth was limited and that He would eventually face crucifixion. Despite this, He continued to fulfil His mission faithfully. This verse reminds us of Jesus’ trust in God’s plan. Likewise, we should trust God’s sovereignty in our lives, even in challenging and uncertain times. God’s purposes will ultimately prevail, and we can find comfort in His faithfulness.

Luke 21:37 offers insight into Jesus’ daily routine and provides lessons on teaching, finding solitude, balancing ministry, and trusting God’s plan. The pattern of day and night suggests a complete dedication to the Father’s will. By reflecting on this verse, we can draw inspiration from Jesus’ example and apply these principles in our own lives, considering the balance of public witness and private devotion.
