And all the people came early in the morning to him in the temple, for to hear him.

This verse captures the devotion and eagerness of the people during the final days of Jesus’ earthly ministry. As Jesus taught daily in the temple shortly before His crucifixion, the common people demonstrated a profound hunger for His word. Despite mounting opposition from religious leaders, the crowds sought Him out with purposeful commitment. The preceding verse notes that Jesus lodged on the Mount of Olives at night, yet He returned to the temple each morning to teach, showing His own diligence and commitment to His mission.

Meaning

The word “all” here indicates a large multitude, not every inhabitant of Jerusalem. Some came out of curiosity, while others were drawn by genuine love for Jesus and His ministry. Their early arrival shows that hearing Jesus was their first priority. This eagerness is commended as worthy of imitation. The parallel scene in John 8:2 describes Jesus coming again into the temple early in the morning, and all the people coming to Him, confirming that this was a recurring pattern in His ministry.

Application

This verse challenges us to evaluate our own spiritual hunger. Do we possess the same eagerness to hear from Christ? Are we willing to order our schedules to spend time in His presence? The people were not commanded to come early; they were drawn by the compelling nature of Jesus and the life-giving power of His words. Seeking God requires intentionality and devotion—a deliberate choice to come to Him with open ears and receptive hearts.

Reflection

The temple was the center of worship and the symbolic dwelling place of God’s presence for Israel. It is fitting that the people came there to hear Jesus, as He is the ultimate revelation of God. They recognized that true spiritual nourishment is found in His presence and teaching. The temple, in these moments, became not just a place of ritual, but a place of dynamic encounter with the living Word of God.
