Luke 21:36

Context:Luke 21:36 is part of Jesus’ discourse on the signs of the end times and the coming of the Son of Man. In this chapter, Jesus foretells the destruction of the temple and the signs that will precede His return. He emphasises the need for His followers to be watchful and prayerful.

Watchfulness:Jesus instructs His disciples to “watch.” This means being spiritually alert, attentive, and aware of the signs and events happening around them. As followers of Christ, we are called to be vigilant, not only in recognising the signs of the times but also in living faithfully and obediently to God’s Word.

Prayer:Jesus also emphasises the importance of prayer. Prayer is a vital aspect of the Christian life and enables believers to communicate with God, seek His guidance, and grow in their relationship with Him. Through prayer, we can express our dependence on God and seek His strength, wisdom, and protection.

Worthiness:The verse speaks of being “accounted worthy.” It does not imply that we can achieve salvation or God’s favour through our own efforts, as salvation is a gift of God’s grace (Ephesians 2:8-9). However, it does highlight the importance of living a life that is pleasing to God and aligning our actions with His will. By following Jesus’ teachings, walking in righteousness, and being faithful to Him, we can be considered worthy in the sense of being found faithful and obedient.

Escape and Stand:Jesus states that those who are watchful and prayerful will be accounted worthy to “escape all these things that shall come to pass.” While the exact meaning of “escape” is debated, it likely refers to being spiritually prepared and protected by God in the midst of trials and tribulations. Believers are not promised exemption from suffering or trials, but God’s presence and strength are with them as they endure. The phrase “stand before the Son of man” refers to being accepted and approved by Jesus when He returns, standing in His presence without shame or fear.
