Luke 21:32

Posted on 18 May at 14:14
Listen to this article

“Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled.”

Context:Luke 21:32 is part of a larger passage known as the Olivet Discourse, where Jesus speaks to His disciples about the signs of the end times and His second coming.

In this verse, Jesus is emphasizing the certainty and nearness of the fulfillment of His prophecies.

To understand the context of this verse, it’s helpful to look at the preceding verses.

In Luke 21:29-31, Jesus tells a parable about the fig tree.

He says that when the fig tree and all the trees start to bud, people can know that summer is near.

Similarly, when they see the signs He mentioned earlier, such as wars, earthquakes, and other tumultuous events, they can know that the kingdom of God is near.

Jesus declares, “Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled.”

This statement has been a topic of interpretation and discussion among scholars and theologians.

There are a few possible interpretations of this verse:

  • Contemporary Fulfillment:Some interpret “this generation” to refer to the people living at the time of Jesus, suggesting that the events Jesus described would happen within their lifetime. According to this view, Jesus is emphasizing the imminence of the fulfillment of His prophecies.
  • Symbolic Generation:Another interpretation suggests that “this generation” is symbolic and refers to a particular type or kind of people. In this view, Jesus is stating that the type of people characterized by the signs He mentioned will not pass away until all things are fulfilled. This interpretation emphasizes the enduring relevance of Jesus’ words for every generation.
  • Future Generation:Some interpret “this generation” to refer to a future generation that will witness the signs and the fulfillment of the prophecies. According to this view, Jesus is indicating that once the events He described begin to take place, they will rapidly unfold and be completed within one generation.

It’s essential to note that interpreting this verse requires considering the broader context and understanding the literary style used in the passage.

Jesus often spoke in parables and used figurative language to convey spiritual truths.

As such, it is essential to interpret this verse in light of other biblical passages that address the end times and Jesus’ return.

Ultimately, the interpretation of Luke 21:32 may vary among individuals and denominations.

However, the verse serves as a reminder of the certainty and nearness of the fulfillment of Jesus’ prophecies and the importance of being watchful and prepared for His return, regardless of the specific timing.
