Psalms 40:5
Many, O Lord my God; are thy wonderfull workes which thou hast done, and thy thoughts, which are to vs ward: they cannot be reckoned vp in order vnto thee: if I would declare and speake of them, they are moe then can be numbred. Psalms 40:5 (KJV)
are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.
Psalms 40: 5 (KJV)
Psalm 40 is attributed to David and is a song of praise and thanksgiving. In the opening verses David recounts his deliverance from a desolate pit and his reliance on the Lord. Verse 5 turns his focus to the multitude of God’s wonderful works and the thoughts He has toward His people.
David declares that God’s works are abundant and marvelous, displayed throughout creation, miracles, deliverance, and providence. These works reveal God’s character, faithfulness, and love for His people. He acknowledges that such works are beyond human comprehension and cannot be fully understood or counted.
He also notes that God’s thoughts toward Israel are gracious and purposeful. These thoughts reflect divine care, guidance, and a plan for restoration and redemption. Scripture affirms that God’s ways and thoughts are higher than ours (cf. Isaiah 55:8‑9), underscoring the depth of His concern for His people.
If David were to declare and speak of every wonderful work and thought of God, the task would be impossible; the number is countless. This reality reveals the limitless nature of God’s actions and His immeasurable goodness, while also highlighting the inadequacy of human language to capture the fullness of His greatness.
Application of this truth invites believers to reflect on God’s wonderful works in their own lives and in the world. By meditating on His faithfulness, provision, answered prayers, and countless acts of love, we are prompted to praise and thank Him, even when we cannot fully comprehend or articulate every detail.
The verse humbles us, reminding us of the vastness and majesty of God’s works and thoughts. Recognizing that God is beyond our understanding cultivates awe and reverence for the Creator of the universe, leading us to worship Him with grateful hearts.
