Listen to this article

“I have preached righteousness in the great congregation: lo, I have not refrained my lips, O LORD, thou knowest.”

Context:Psalm 40 is attributed to King David and can be categorized as a psalm of thanksgiving and trust in God’s deliverance. In this particular verse, David expresses his commitment to proclaiming righteousness before a great congregation, indicating his dedication to sharing God’s truth.

Proclaiming Righteousness:The verse begins with David stating, “I have preached righteousness.” This emphasizes David’s role as a messenger of God’s righteousness to others. As a king and a spiritual leader, David took the responsibility of teaching and exhorting the people to live according to God’s commandments.

Great Congregation:The phrase “in the great congregation” implies that David’s message was not limited to private settings but was proclaimed before a large gathering of people. David had a platform to address a large assembly, whether it was in the tabernacle or during public events. This highlights the significance of publicly declaring God’s righteousness and spreading His truth among a wider audience.

Unrestrained Lips:David declares, “lo, I have not refrained my lips.” This statement reflects his unhesitant commitment to speak forth God’s truth. David didn’t hold back or shy away from proclaiming righteousness. He was bold and resolute in his proclamation, irrespective of the consequences or opposition he might face.

God’s Knowledge:David acknowledges that God knows the sincerity and depth of his commitment to proclaim righteousness. He says, “O LORD, thou knowest.” This indicates that David’s dedication to preaching righteousness was not merely for show but was genuine and known to God.

Overall, Psalm 40:9 reveals David’s fervent dedication to proclaiming righteousness before a large congregation. It emphasizes the importance of boldly and unreservedly declaring God’s truth to others, even in the face of opposition or challenges. David’s example encourages believers to faithfully share God’s righteousness and His Word with others, trusting in God’s knowledge and guidance.
