Psalms 40:10

I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation: I have not concealed thy lovingkindness and thy truth from the great congregation.

Context

Psalm 40 is a song of praise and thanksgiving from King David. He wrote it after God delivered him from deep trouble. In this verse, David speaks to the gathered worshiping community, called the great congregation. His words are a public testimony, not a private thought.

Meaning

David says he has not hidden God’s righteousness within his heart. The heart here means the inner self, the place of thought and will. To hide it would be to keep it private, but David instead declares it openly. He proclaims God’s faithfulness, which is His reliability and loyalty to His promises. He also declares God’s salvation, His deliverance and redemption for His people.

David has not concealed God’s lovingkindness and truth. Lovingkindness, or chesed in Hebrew, is God’s steadfast love and mercy. Truth is God’s faithfulness to His word. Both are closely linked, showing that God’s love is dependable and His promises are sure. David makes these known to the whole assembly, so that all may hear and rejoice.

Biblical connections

This verse follows David’s resolve in Psalm 40:9 to proclaim God’s righteousness in the great congregation. It also prepares for his plea for continued mercy in Psalm 40:11. The pattern of public praise is central to the life of faith. The righteousness of God is not abstract; it is revealed in His saving acts.
