“Blessed is he that considereth the poor: the LORD will deliver him in time of trouble.”

Psalm 41:1 (KJV):Blessed is he that considereth the poor: the LORD will deliver him in time of trouble.

Context:The book of Psalms is a collection of songs and prayers that express a range of human emotions and experiences. Psalm 41 is attributed to David and is classified as a psalm of lament. It reflects David’s personal struggles and serves as a plea for God’s mercy and deliverance.

Understanding the verse:

  • “Blessed is he that considereth the poor”:This verse highlights the importance of caring for the poor and needy. The word “considereth” implies more than just acknowledging their presence; it conveys the idea of showing deep concern, empathy, and taking action to help those in need.
  • “The LORD will deliver him in time of trouble”:This verse emphasizes God’s promise to protect and deliver those who show compassion to the poor. It implies that when the person who helps the poor faces their own difficulties and trials, God will come to their aid and provide deliverance.
  • Key themes:
  • Compassion and care for the poor:The verse encourages believers to have a heart of compassion and generosity towards those who are less fortunate. It reminds us of the biblical mandate to love our neighbours and extend a helping hand to those in need.
  • God’s deliverance:The verse underscores the trustworthiness of God in times of trouble. It assures us that when we face our own challenges, God remains faithful and will come to our rescue. His deliverance may manifest in various ways, such as providing guidance, comfort, or tangible assistance.
  • Application:

    • Practising compassion:This verse encourages us to actively consider the poor and marginalised in our communities. It challenges us to find practical ways to extend help, whether through charitable acts, volunteering, or supporting organisations that aid the needy.
    • Trusting in God’s deliverance:As believers, we can take comfort in the assurance that God will be with us during times of trouble. When we encounter difficulties or face adversity, we can rely on His faithfulness, seeking His guidance, strength, and provision.
    • Related verses:
    • Proverbs 19:17 (KJV):“He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD, and that which he hath given will he pay him again.”
    • Matthew 25:40 (KJV):“And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.”

Remember, studying the Bible involves diving deeper into the surrounding context and exploring related verses to gain a broader understanding of its message.
