Psalms 45:7

Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

Psalms 45:7 (KJV)

This verse belongs to a royal psalm, likely composed for a Davidic king on his wedding day. The psalm praises the king’s character and celebrates God’s favour upon him. Many Christians also read it as a messianic prophecy, seeing Jesus Christ as the ultimate King described here.

The verse begins with two marks of the king’s character: he loves righteousness and hates wickedness. These are not weak feelings but deep commitments. His love for what is right and his hatred of evil show moral integrity and full devotion to God’s standards.

Because of this character, God anoints him with the oil of gladness. Anointing with oil was a sign of being chosen and empowered for a special task. Here it brings joy and sets the king above his companions. The phrase “above thy fellows” means he receives a unique honour and exaltation.

Hebrews 1:9 applies this verse to Jesus Christ. Jesus perfectly loved righteousness and hated wickedness, and God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and joy beyond all others. This connection shows that the psalm’s words find their fullest meaning in Christ, the promised Messiah and King.

Believers are called to examine their own loves and hates. Do we truly love what is right and turn away from evil? The verse teaches that God delights in those who pursue righteousness and reject wickedness. Such a life leads to divine favour and true joy.

The oil of gladness also reminds us of the Holy Spirit’s presence. When we walk in obedience, God gives us joy that does not depend on circumstances. This joy is a gift that sets us apart and strengthens us for His purposes.

This verse invites us to see that God rewards those who honour Him. The king’s anointing was a result of his character. In the same way, our choices to love righteousness and hate wickedness open the way for God’s blessing and gladness in our lives.
