Listen to this article

“Kings’ daughters were among thy honourable women: upon thy right hand did stand the queen in gold of Ophir.”

Psalm 45 is a royal psalm attributed to the sons of Korah and is often understood as a Messianic psalm, praising the majestic King and his bride. This particular verse, Psalm 45:9, speaks about the presence and position of the queen in the royal court.

Let’s break down the verse and explore its meaning and significance:

“Kings’ daughters were among thy honourable women”: This phrase suggests that the king’s daughters were present in the court and were counted among the honorable women. In a literal sense, this could refer to princesses or noble women who were part of the royal family or had been brought from other kingdoms through marriage alliances. Symbolically, it can also represent the people of God, who are considered part of the royal lineage through their relationship with the King of kings.

“Upon thy right hand did stand the queen”: Here, the psalmist mentions the queen who stands at the right hand of the king. In the context of the psalm, the king is often seen as a Messianic figure, and the queen can be seen as a representation of the bride or the people of God. The right hand is a position of honor and authority, indicating the esteemed position of the queen beside the king.

“In gold of Ophir”: The queen is described as being adorned in gold from Ophir. Ophir was a region renowned for its precious metals, particularly gold. This phrase emphasizes the queen’s splendor and magnificence, symbolizing her royal status and the glory associated with her position.

The verse, in its broader context, highlights the majestic nature of the king and the splendor of his court. It may also allude to the Messianic hope and the future union of Christ, the King, with His bride, the Church. This psalm ultimately points towards the glorious reign of the Messiah and the joyous celebration that accompanies it.

As with any biblical study, it’s essential to consider the broader context and the overall themes presented in the Psalm to gain a deeper understanding of its message.
