Listen to this article

“As we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the Lord of hosts, in the city of our God: God will establish it forever. Selah.”

Context: Psalm 48 is attributed to the sons of Korah and is a song celebrating the city of Jerusalem, which is often referred to as the “city of God.” The psalm highlights God’s protection, strength, and everlasting presence in the city.

Reflecting on God’s Actions: The verse begins with the phrase “As we have heard, so have we seen.” It acknowledges that the people of God have heard about His deeds and have personally experienced His faithfulness. This verse emphasizes the link between hearing about God’s works and witnessing them firsthand. It suggests that the testimonies of others can strengthen our own faith as we encounter God’s actions in our lives.

The City of the Lord: The verse mentions two names for the city: “the city of the Lord of hosts” and “the city of our God.” These descriptions emphasize God’s sovereignty and ownership over Jerusalem. It signifies that the city is under God’s divine protection and care.

God’s Eternal Establishment: The verse states, “God will establish it forever.” This phrase emphasizes God’s enduring presence and his commitment to the city of Jerusalem. It speaks to God’s faithfulness and His everlasting covenant with His people. Despite challenges and changes throughout history, God’s purposes for Jerusalem will prevail, and His plans for the city will stand firm.

Selah: The verse concludes with the word “Selah,” which appears frequently throughout the Psalms. While its precise meaning is uncertain, it is believed to signify a pause, encouraging reflection on the preceding statements. In this verse, Selah prompts the reader to meditate on the eternal establishment of God’s city and the significance of His actions in their lives.
