Psalms 49:20

Man that is in honour, and understandeth not, is like the beasts that perish.

Psalms 49:20 (KJV)

Psalm 49 is a wisdom psalm from the sons of Korah. It addresses all people, rich and poor alike, and teaches about the fleeting nature of wealth and the certainty of death. The psalmist warns against trusting in riches, because no amount of money can redeem a life or prevent the grave.

Verse 20 closes the psalm with a strong comparison. A person who is honored or wealthy but lacks understanding is like the beasts that perish. This echoes verse 12, which says that man in honor does not remain; he is like the beasts that perish. The repetition shows how important this warning is.

The word “understanding” here means more than intelligence. It means spiritual insight and discernment. It includes knowing that God is the source of all honor and wealth, and knowing the way of salvation through Christ. Without this understanding, a person may have earthly honor, but they share the same end as animals that die.

The comparison to beasts is not an insult to animals. It shows that humans without spiritual understanding live only for the present, like animals that have no thought of eternity. They may be respected by others, but their lives lack the deeper purpose that comes from knowing God.

This verse connects with the whole message of Psalm 49. The psalm teaches that no one can redeem another from death, and that the rich and the wise alike will die. True hope is not found in wealth but in God, who alone can redeem a soul. The understanding that the psalmist speaks of is the knowledge of God and His ways, which leads to eternal life.

This verse calls us to examine what we value. Honor, wealth, and social standing are temporary. They cannot secure our future beyond death. We should seek spiritual understanding first, by knowing God through Christ and living according to His truth. This understanding gives meaning to our lives and hope for eternity.

We can also use our resources wisely, remembering that they are gifts from God. We should not trust in them for security, but use them to serve others and honor God. In this way, we show that our true treasure is not on earth but in heaven.

Consider your own life. Do you place more confidence in your achievements and possessions than in God? Do you live with the awareness that death is certain and that only God can give eternal life? Let this verse move you to seek the understanding that truly matters, so that you do not perish like the beasts, but live in the hope of God’s redemption.
