Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God hath shined.
Psalms 50:2 (KJV)
Context
The book of Psalms is a collection of poetic songs and prayers. Psalm 50 is attributed to Asaph, one of David’s chief musicians. It is a psalm of judgment, reminding Israel of the importance of genuine worship and true repentance. In this verse, God calls the earth to hear His words.
Meaning
Zion refers to Jerusalem, specifically the hill where the temple was built. In the Old Testament, Zion is the dwelling place of God and the center of worship. Here, it is the place where God reveals Himself and speaks to His people.
The phrase “the perfection of beauty” is a poetic description of Zion, emphasizing its splendor and significance. It portrays Zion as the epitome of beauty, highlighting its importance in worship and revelation.
“God hath shined” suggests that God’s glory and presence radiate from Zion. The Hebrew verb can mean “hath shined” or “shall shine,” indicating both that God has revealed Himself and that He will continue to do so. This divine illumination brings light and understanding to His people.
Biblical connections
Some commentators see Christ as the perfection of beauty, the one who is fairer than the children of men and more glorious than the angels. As Mediator, He is full of grace and truth. The verse points to God’s self-revelation in Zion, which culminates in Christ, who is the ultimate expression of that divine beauty and glory.
