Psalms 51:5

Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.

Psalms 51:5 (KJV)

Psalm 51 is David’s prayer of repentance after his sin with Bathsheba. In verse 5, David confesses that sin has been part of his life from the very beginning. This is not about his parents’ personal sins, but about the universal human condition.

David says he was “shapen in iniquity” and conceived in sin. The Hebrew words emphasize that sin was present from the start of his existence. This deepens his repentance: his problem is not only his actions, but his very nature. He is not making an excuse; he is acknowledging that he needs cleansing that only God can provide.

This verse aligns with the doctrine of original sin, which traces back to Adam and Eve’s disobedience in Genesis 3. Because of that fall, every person is born with a sinful nature. This teaching is confirmed in Romans 3:23, which says all have sinned and fall short of God’s glory. The ultimate solution is Jesus Christ, who was born without sin and offers cleansing and new life through His sacrifice.

This verse should not lead to despair or fatalism. Instead, it should produce humility and gratitude. When we recognize that sin is deeper than our choices, we see our need for God’s grace. We cannot fix ourselves by moral effort alone; we need the new birth that Christ gives.

David’s confession invites us to examine our own hearts. Do we see sin as a surface problem or as a deep condition? Honest acknowledgment of our nature leads us to rely fully on God’s mercy. His grace is greater than our inherited sin, and He is faithful to forgive and restore all who come to Him in repentance.
