Psalms 50:5

Posted on 18 May at 15:16

“Gather my saints together unto me; those that have made a covenant with me by sacrifice.”

Context:Psalm 50 is attributed to Asaph, one of David’s chief musicians. It is a psalm that focuses on the theme of God’s judgment and the importance of true worship. In this particular verse, God speaks, calling upon His saints and those who have made a covenant with Him.

Gathering the Saints:God declares His desire to gather His saints unto Himself. The term “saints” refers to those who are dedicated to God and set apart for His service. In the Old Testament, the saints were the faithful followers of Yahweh. In the New Testament, the term “saints” is often used to refer to all believers in Jesus Christ. Here, it emphasises God’s longing to assemble His faithful people.

Covenant with Sacrifice:God specifically mentions those who have made a covenant with Him by sacrifice. In the Old Testament, covenants were significant agreements between God and His people. They often involved promises, obligations, and sacrifices. Sacrifices were offered as a way to demonstrate commitment and seek God’s forgiveness. The mention of sacrifice in this verse suggests that true covenant relationship with God involves a surrender of self, repentance, and seeking His forgiveness.

Spiritual Application:The verse has spiritual implications for believers today. It reminds us of the importance of making a covenant with God, which is made possible through Jesus Christ. In the New Testament, Jesus is the ultimate sacrifice for sin, fulfilling the need for any further animal sacrifices. Through faith in Jesus, we enter into a new covenant with God, based on His grace and mercy. This covenant calls us to offer ourselves as living sacrifices, dedicated to God’s service (Romans 12:1).

  • Worship and Obedience:The verse highlights the significance of true worship and obedience to God. Merely going through religious rituals or offering sacrifices without a genuine heart change does not fulfil the covenant relationship with God. He desires heartfelt worship, obedience, and a genuine commitment to Him. As Jesus said, “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24, KJV).

In summary, Psalm 50:5 emphasises God’s desire to gather His saints and those who have made a covenant with Him by sacrifice. It reminds us of the importance of genuine worship, a surrendered heart, and a covenant relationship with God through Jesus Christ. May we seek to worship God in spirit and truth, dedicating ourselves to His service.
