Psalms 48:13

“Mark ye well her bulwarks, consider her palaces; that ye may tell it to the generation following.”

1. Context: Psalm 48 is a song of praise and thanksgiving for God’s protection and presence in the city of Jerusalem. The psalm emphasizes the greatness of Zion, the city of God, and how it stands as a symbol of God’s faithfulness.

2. Understanding the imagery:

  • – “Bulwarks”: The term “bulwarks” refers to the strong defensive walls or fortifications of the city. In this context, it represents the strength and security of Jerusalem, which symbolizes God’s protection.
  • – “Palaces”: The word “palaces” refers to the beautiful and magnificent buildings within the city. These palaces highlight the glory and splendor of Jerusalem as a city chosen by God.

3. Call to observe and declare:

  • – “Mark ye well”: This phrase encourages the people to carefully consider and observe the strength and security of Jerusalem’s defenses. It prompts them to pay attention to the details and appreciate God’s provision and protection.
  • – “Consider her palaces”: The psalmist urges the people to contemplate the grandeur and beauty of Jerusalem’s palaces. It prompts them to reflect on the blessings and favor God has bestowed upon His city.

4. Passing on the testimony:

  • – “That ye may tell it to the generation following”: The psalmist emphasizes the importance of passing on the knowledge and experiences of God’s faithfulness to future generations. The intention is to ensure that the story of God’s protection and blessing upon Jerusalem is not forgotten but shared with subsequent generations.

5. Application:

  • – Recognizing God’s protection: Just as Jerusalem was secure within its strong walls, we can find safety and refuge in God’s protection. We should acknowledge and appreciate the ways in which God has guarded and shielded us throughout our lives.
  • – Appreciating God’s blessings: God’s blessings are often evident in the beauty and abundance around us. We should take time to consider and be grateful for the blessings, both big and small, that God has graciously given to us.
  • – Sharing God’s faithfulness: It is essential to share our testimonies of God’s faithfulness with others, particularly the younger generation. By passing on our experiences of God’s goodness, we inspire and encourage others to trust in Him and His promises.
