Psalms 55:2

Posted on 18 May at 11:25

Attend vnto me, and heare me: I mourne in my complaint, and make a noise. Psalms 55:2 (KJV)

Context: The book of Psalms is a collection of poetic songs and prayers written by various authors, including King David. Many of the laments are traditionally associated with David, though the precise authorship of each individual psalm can be uncertain.

Calling for God’s Attention: The psalmist begins by calling on God to pay attention and listen to his cry. The word “hear” here implies an urgent appeal for God’s presence and intervention. It reflects the psalmist’s desire for God to be attentive and responsive to his distress.

Mourning and Complaining: The psalmist expresses deep sorrow and grief through mourning. The phrase “I mourn in my complaint” suggests that the psalmist is not only experiencing sadness but also voicing his grievances before God. The psalmist feels overwhelmed and burdened, and his complaint may pertain to his circumstances or the actions of his enemies.

Making a Noise: The psalmist further explains that he makes a noise. This could refer to audible expressions of distress, such as weeping, groaning, or crying out to God. The psalmist is pouring out his emotions before God, seeking solace and relief in the midst of his turmoil.

Honesty and Transparency: The psalmist’s example reminds us of the importance of being honest with God about our emotions and struggles. God desires us to bring our whole selves before Him, including our pain, complaints, and grievances. He invites us to approach Him with authenticity, knowing that He understands and cares.

Seeking God’s Presence: In times of distress, it is crucial to turn to God and call upon Him. The psalmist’s plea for God’s attention emphasizes the need for divine intervention. We, too, can seek God’s presence through prayer, acknowledging our dependence on Him and trusting that He hears and responds to our cries.

Approach God with honesty, pouring out our hearts and expressing our concerns openly.

Seek God’s presence through prayer, knowing that He hears and cares for us.

Find comfort and strength in God, trusting that He is our refuge and will provide solace in times of need.

Remember, the Psalms provide a rich source of inspiration and guidance for our spiritual journeys, offering words of comfort, praise, lament, and hope.

“Attend unto me, and hear me: I mourn in my complaint, and make a noise.”

“Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness: thou hast heard my supplications.”
