Psalms 55:2
Attend unto me, and hear me: I mourn in my complaint, and make a noise;
Psalms 55:2 (KJV)
Context
The surrounding verses show the psalmist under severe pressure from enemies who oppress him and cast trouble upon him. This urgent setting explains why he cries out so earnestly for God to listen. The Psalms often give voice to such raw distress, and here the writer pleads for divine attention in the midst of real danger.
Meaning
The opening words, “Attend unto me, and hear me,” are a desperate plea for God to notice and respond. The Hebrew word translated “complaint” can also mean “meditation” or “solitary thought.” So the psalmist is not merely grumbling; he is deeply reflecting on his pain. His mourning is real and heavy. The phrase “make a noise” suggests audible groans or loud cries, not quiet sighs. He pours out raw emotion before God, holding nothing back.
This honesty is a model for prayer. God does not turn away from our distress. He welcomes our authentic cries, even when they are noisy and unpolished. The psalmist shows that lament is a legitimate form of worship, not a lack of faith.
Biblical connections
This verse echoes other psalms of lament, such as Psalm 22:1 and Psalm 38:8, where the writer cries out in anguish and groans under heavy burden. These connections show a consistent pattern: God’s people bring their suffering to Him openly. The verse also points to Christ, who in His earthly life lamented the faithlessness around Him and cried to the Father in distress, yet without sin. His example assures us that honest sorrow is acceptable before God.
Application
In times of trouble, we can approach God with honesty, pouring out our hearts and expressing our concerns openly. We do not need to hide our pain or pretend to be strong. Instead, we can seek God’s presence through persistent prayer, trusting that He hears and cares. When circumstances feel overwhelming, we can find comfort and strength in God, knowing He is our refuge and will provide solace.
Bring your whole self to God, including your complaints and grief.
Cry out to Him without fear, knowing He is attentive to His people.
Trust that God responds to sincere prayer, even when the answer is delayed.
Reflection
This verse invites us to consider: do we believe God truly listens? The psalmist’s urgent plea reminds us that God is not distant or indifferent. He bends His ear to our cries. We can come to Him just as we are, with all our noise and sorrow, and rest in the assurance that He hears and will answer in His perfect time.
