Psalms 58:3

The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies.

Psalms 58:3 (KJV)

David laments against unjust rulers and judges who pervert justice (Psalm 58:1-2). This verse exposes the root of their corruption: they are wicked from birth, not merely influenced by their surroundings. Even those in authority share this fallen condition, and without divine intervention they remain estranged from God.

“Estranged from the womb” means the wicked are alienated from God and his righteous order from the very start of life. “Go astray as soon as they be born” shows that their rebellion is innate, not learned. “Speaking lies” reveals deceit as the natural expression of a corrupt heart. The early timing stresses that this wickedness is deeply rooted in human nature, not a later choice.

This teaching aligns with the doctrine of original sin, which traces the universal tendency to sin back to the fall of Adam and Eve (Genesis 3). Because no one is righteous by nature, every person inherits a sinful condition and needs God’s grace for redemption. The verse underscores the seriousness of sin, which begins early and manifests in deceitful speech. It also reminds us that no human effort can remove this deep flaw.

Recognize the reality of sin in every person, including ourselves. Avoid self-righteousness and rely on God’s transforming power through Christ, who alone can reconcile sinners to God. This calls us to humility and dependence on divine grace, not on our own goodness. When we see deceit in others, we remember that we too need mercy.

This verse is a sobering reminder of humanity’s fallen condition. It calls us to seek righteousness and truth, and to trust in God’s mercy rather than our own merit. It also reminds us of our deep need for redemption and the hope found in Christ, who can change even the most stubborn heart.
