Psalms 60:5

That thy beloved may be delivered; save with thy right hand, and hear me.

Psalms 60:5 (KJV)

Psalm 60 is a lament attributed to David, written during a time of distress, possibly after a military defeat. The psalm is a cry to God for help and restoration for the nation of Israel. This verse is a concise plea for deliverance and salvation, divided into two parts: the desire that God’s beloved may be delivered, and the request for salvation by God’s right hand with a hearing of the prayer.

The term “thy beloved” refers to God’s chosen people, the nation of Israel, who are in a covenant relationship with Him and set apart as His special possession. Some interpreters extend this to the elect of God among both Jews and Gentiles, loved with a free, sovereign, everlasting, and unchangeable love. The “right hand” is symbolically associated with strength, power, and authority, representing God’s ability to deliver and protect His people. David acknowledges that deliverance can only come through God’s intervention. The verse emphasizes the communal aspect of salvation, as the plea is not just for personal benefit but for all whom God loves. The KJV reading “hear me” is a personal plea, while many other translations render it “answer us,” reflecting the corporate nature of the prayer.

This verse is closely connected to Psalm 108:6, which repeats this plea nearly verbatim, showing its importance in David’s prayers. The immediate context includes the display of a banner (Psalm 60:4), and the “Selah” at the end of that verse marks a pause, linking the beloved’s deliverance to the saving action requested. The verse reflects a deep trust in God’s covenant love and His mighty power to save.

  • Trusting in God’s deliverance: Like David, we can turn to God in times of distress and trust in His ability to deliver us. This verse reminds us that God is our ultimate source of salvation and that we can rely on His right hand, His power and authority, to rescue us from any situation.

  • Prayer as a means of communication: This verse encourages us to approach God in prayer, pouring out our hearts and making our requests known to Him. It reminds us that God hears the prayers of His beloved people and invites us to bring our needs before Him.

  • Dependence on God’s strength: Just as David recognized his need for God’s intervention, we should acknowledge our dependence on God’s strength and provision in our lives. By surrendering to Him and seeking His guidance, we can experience His deliverance and salvation.

This verse calls us to remember that we are God’s beloved, and He is willing and able to save us. It invites us to bring our needs to Him in prayer, trusting in His power and love. As we face our own battles, we can echo David’s plea, knowing that God hears and answers.
