Psalms 68:3

But let the righteous be glad; let them rejoice before God: yea, let them exceedingly rejoice.

Psalms 68:3 (KJV)

Psalm 68 is attributed to King David and is a psalm of praise and triumph. It celebrates God’s victory over His enemies and the establishment of His reign. In the opening verses, God arises and scatters His enemies; verse 3 then presents the response of the righteous to God’s victorious action. The call to rejoice is not abstract but flows directly from God’s mighty deliverance.

“The righteous” are those in a right relationship with God, justified through faith and walking in obedience to His Word. Their gladness is rooted in knowing God’s goodness and faithfulness. The Hebrew parallelism intensifies the call: the righteous are to be glad, to rejoice before God, and to exceedingly rejoice. This is not a mild happiness but an overflowing, abundant joy that surpasses earthly circumstances. Rejoicing before God is a personal and intimate act of worship, expressed through praise, thanksgiving, and joyful celebration. It acknowledges His sovereignty, power, and provision.

This verse echoes the broader biblical theme that joy is fitting for the righteous. Other psalms call the righteous to rejoice in the Lord, such as Psalm 32:11 and Psalm 33:1. The exceeding joy commanded here reflects a heart fully engaged in worship, a joy that is a response to God’s grace and deliverance.

  • As believers today, Psalm 68:3 reminds us to rejoice in the presence of God regardless of our circumstances. Our joy should stem from knowing God, experiencing His love and salvation, and recognizing His ongoing work in our lives. Rejoicing before God is not dependent on external factors but is rooted in our relationship with Him.

When we genuinely rejoice before God, it brings honor and glory to Him, uplifts our spirits, strengthens our faith, and draws us closer to Him. Our joy can be expressed through singing praises, praying with thanksgiving, sharing our testimonies, and living a life that reflects the joy and hope found in Christ.

Psalm 68:3 encourages the righteous to rejoice before God with exceeding joy. May we always find delight in His presence and let our hearts overflow with gratitude and gladness as we walk in righteousness and experience the blessings of a relationship with Him.
