Psalms 71:3

Posted on 18 May at 15:15

“Be thou my strong habitation, whereunto I may continually resort: thou hast given commandment to save me; for thou art my rock and my fortress.”

Psalm 71:3 (KJV) says: “Be thou my strong habitation, whereunto I may continually resort: thou hast given commandment to save me; for thou art my rock and my fortress.”

Context: The Book of Psalms is a collection of poetic prayers and songs written by various authors, including King David. Psalm 71 is attributed to David in his old age, and it is a plea for God’s protection and deliverance from enemies.

Dependence on God: In this verse, David acknowledges his dependence on God as his strong habitation. This metaphorical language indicates that David finds refuge, security, and stability in God. Just as a habitation provides shelter and protection, David seeks God’s presence as his safe dwelling place.

Continual Resort: David desires to continually resort to God as his place of refuge. This shows his consistent reliance on God’s strength and guidance throughout his life. It reflects a deep trust in God’s unfailing protection and the recognition that God is the ultimate source of strength in times of trouble.

God’s Saving Commandment: David recognizes that God has given a commandment to save him. This suggests that God has made a definitive decision to rescue and deliver David from his adversaries. David finds comfort and assurance in the knowledge that God is actively involved in his life and has issued a decree for his salvation.

God as a Rock and Fortress: David refers to God as his rock and fortress. These metaphors emphasize the stability, security, and impenetrability that David finds in God. A rock symbolizes strength and durability, while a fortress represents a place of protection and defense. David finds solace in God’s unchanging nature and His ability to shield him from harm.

Lessons we can learn from Psalm 71:3:

  • a) Dependence on God: Like David, we should recognize our need for God’s strength and protection in our lives. We can find comfort and security in seeking refuge in Him, knowing that He is our ultimate source of help and support.
  • b) Continual reliance: Just as David desired to continually resort to God, we should cultivate a habit of seeking God’s presence and guidance in our lives. Rather than turning to other sources for security or solutions, we should consistently rely on God’s unfailing love and care.
  • c) Trust in God’s deliverance: David’s confidence in God’s saving commandment encourages us to trust in God’s faithfulness. Even in the face of adversity or opposition, we can have faith that God is actively working on our behalf and will deliver us according to His perfect timing.
  • d) God as our refuge: When we view God as our rock and fortress, we find strength and security in His character. We can rest assured that He will provide us with a place of shelter and protection, shielding us from the storms of life.

Overall, Psalm 71:3 reminds us of the importance of seeking God’s refuge, relying on Him consistently, trusting in His deliverance, and finding strength in His unchanging nature. It encourages us to place our complete dependence on God, knowing that He is our ultimate source of security and salvation.
