Listen to this article

“Deliver me, O my God, out of the hand of the wicked, out of the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man.”

Context:To better understand the significance of this verse, let’s look at the broader context of Psalm 71. Throughout the psalm, the writer expresses his trust in God’s faithfulness and seeks refuge in Him. The psalmist recognizes God as his rock, his fortress, and his deliverer. He recalls God’s past acts of salvation and asks for His continued protection in his old age. The psalmist’s plea for deliverance from the wicked is a recurring theme throughout the psalm.

The plea for deliverance:In verse 4, the psalmist cries out to God, acknowledging His power and authority. The psalmist recognizes the presence of wicked and unrighteous individuals who seek to harm him. These adversaries are described as cruel, meaning they lack compassion and show no mercy. The psalmist realizes that he is unable to save himself from their grip and, therefore, turns to God for deliverance.

Trust in God’s deliverance:The psalmist’s plea is grounded in his faith in God’s ability to save. By addressing God as “my God,” the psalmist establishes a personal and intimate relationship with the Lord. This demonstrates his confidence that God is not only powerful but also attentive to his cries for help. The psalmist places his trust in God’s character, knowing that He is just and merciful.

  • Psalm 71:4 serves as a reminder for believers today. It teaches us to turn to God when we find ourselves in the midst of difficult circumstances, facing opposition, or dealing with wickedness around us. We can learn from the psalmist’s example and take our concerns to God in prayer, seeking His deliverance and protection.

Furthermore, this verse highlights the importance of acknowledging our limitations and recognizing that only God has the power to rescue us from the hands of the wicked. It encourages us to place our trust in God’s sovereignty and rely on Him to bring about justice and deliverance in His perfect timing.
