Psalms 72:7

Posted on 18 May at 15:15
Listen to this article

“In his days shall the righteous flourish; and abundance of peace so long as the moon endureth.”

Context:Psalm 72 is a royal psalm attributed to King Solomon, and it is often considered a prayer for his reign. However, many scholars believe that it has messianic implications, ultimately pointing to Jesus Christ, the perfect King and Messiah.

This verse is taken from Psalm 72, which is attributed to King Solomon. It is a prayer for the righteous and just reign of the king, and it contains messianic undertones, pointing to the future Messiah who would bring righteousness, peace, and prosperity.

“In his days shall the righteous flourish”: This phrase highlights the desire for righteousness and prosperity during the reign of the king. It expresses the hope that under a just ruler, the righteous will thrive and experience growth, both spiritually and materially.

In the context of Jesus Christ, the verse finds its ultimate fulfillment. Jesus, the promised Messiah and the perfect King, brings about the flourishing of righteousness. Through His redemptive work and the establishment of His kingdom, righteousness is made available to all who believe in Him. As believers, we are called to live in righteousness and experience spiritual growth as we abide in Him.

“Abundance of peace so long as the moon endureth”: The phrase “abundance of peace” indicates an abundance or fullness of peace. It implies not just the absence of conflict but the presence of well-being, harmony, and prosperity. The phrase “so long as the moon endureth” suggests an enduring and everlasting peace.

In the Messianic context, this verse points to Jesus Christ as the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6). Through His sacrificial death and resurrection, Jesus reconciles humanity to God, offering peace with God. Furthermore, His kingdom is characterized by peace, both in the spiritual sense of inner peace and the hope of an ultimate restoration of peace in all aspects of creation.

  • Personal righteousness:As believers, we are called to live righteously, seeking to align our lives with God’s Word and His principles. This involves pursuing holiness, integrity, and justice in all areas of life. By doing so, we can experience the flourishing of righteousness within us and see God’s blessings poured out upon our lives.
  • Pursuing peace:We are also called to be peacemakers (Matthew 5:9). As followers of Christ, we should actively seek peace, both in our relationships and in the world around us. By promoting reconciliation, forgiveness, and love, we can contribute to the establishment of peace in our families, communities, and the broader society.
  • Anticipating the ultimate fulfillment:While we experience glimpses of righteousness and peace in this world, the complete fulfillment of this verse will come in the future, with the return of Jesus Christ and the establishment of His eternal kingdom. As believers, we look forward to that day when righteousness and peace will fully reign, and there will be no more pain, suffering, or conflict.
