Psalms 72:6

He shall come down like rain upon the mown grass: as showers that water the earth.

Psalms 72:6 (KJV)

Psalm 72 is a royal psalm, likely written by Solomon as a prayer for the king of Israel. It asks God to give the king justice, righteousness, and prosperity so that his rule may bless the whole nation. In the ancient Near East, rain was a sign of divine blessing and life-giving provision. In this setting, verse 6 uses the image of rain to describe the effect of a righteous king’s reign.

In ancient Israel, rain was essential for life. It came at the right time to refresh the land and make crops grow. The phrase “rain upon the mown grass” pictures rain falling on grass that has just been cut, bringing new growth and restoration. “Showers that water the earth” suggests generous, widespread rain that reaches every part of the ground. Together, these images show that the king’s rule brings refreshment, growth, and blessing to all his people. The mown grass also suggests humility and readiness: the grass is cut low, ready to receive the rain, a picture of a humble heart ready to receive God’s blessing.

The verse also points beyond any earthly king. In the Old Testament, God’s coming is sometimes compared to rain, as in Hosea 6:3, where the prophet urges Israel to know the Lord, whose coming is as certain as the spring rain. This connection shows that the king’s righteous reign is a sign of God’s own care. The ultimate fulfilment is Jesus Christ, the Messiah, who came down from heaven to bring spiritual refreshment and salvation. His reign brings life to a dry and weary world.

For believers, the image of rain on mown grass teaches humility and readiness. The grass is cut low, ready to receive the rain. In the same way, a humble heart is ready to receive God’s blessing. This verse encourages us to trust in God’s provision and to pray for Christ’s kingdom to spread, bringing renewal to dry and weary hearts and communities. As we pray for His reign, we also open our own hearts to receive His refreshing grace.

Psalm 72:6 reminds us that true leadership, whether in a king or in our own lives, should bring life and blessing to others. As we see the ultimate fulfilment in Jesus, we are called to reflect His refreshing love in our daily actions, being agents of growth and hope in a world that often feels dry. Let us live as those who have received the rain, ready to share its blessing.
