They shall feare thee as long as the Sunne & Moone indure, throughout all generations. Psalms 72:5 (KJV)

Psalm 72:5 is a Messianic psalm traditionally attributed to King Solomon; some scholars suggest it may have been composed by David as a prayer for his son Solomon, while the heading in many translations reads “A Psalm of Solomon.” In verse 5 we encounter a powerful statement about the fear of God enduring as long as the sun and moon exist, throughout all generations.

Fear of God: The word “fear” in this context refers to reverence, awe, and respect for God. It is not a paralyzing fear but a recognition of God’s sovereignty and majesty. This fear leads to worship, obedience, and a desire to please God.

Enduring as long as the sun and moon: The sun and moon are often used in the Bible to represent stability, constancy, and permanence. Here the psalmist emphasizes that the fear of God will continue to exist as long as these celestial bodies endure, signifying the everlasting nature of God’s authority and the enduring relevance of His worship.

Throughout all generations: The verse also emphasizes the timeless nature of the fear of God. The fear of God is not limited to a specific era or a single generation but extends throughout all generations, an essential aspect of the relationship between humanity and God.

Overall, Psalm 72:5 underscores the enduring reverence for God that should be present in the hearts of people throughout all generations. It reminds us that God’s authority and worship are not limited to a particular time but are to be acknowledged by every generation. This verse can serve as an encouragement for believers to uphold the fear of God, recognizing His everlasting authority and seeking to live in obedience to His will. It also reminds us that the fear of God is not a passing trend but a timeless principle that should shape our lives and guide our actions. By studying and applying this verse, we can cultivate a deep respect for God and live in a way that honours Him, not just for our generation but for all generations to come.
