Listen to this article

My lippes shall greatly reioyce when I sing vnto thee: and my soule, which thou hast redeemed. Psalms 71:23 (KJV)

Psalm 71, attributed to David, is a prayer for deliverance and protection in times of trouble. In verse 23 the psalmist declares his joy and gratitude for God’s redemption.

Rejoicing in God’s Redemption – The opening words, “My lips shall greatly rejoice,” express an exuberant joy that is poured out in singing. Throughout Scripture singing is linked with thanksgiving and worship, and here the psalmist’s rejoicing springs from a deep appreciation of God’s redemptive work.

The Soul Redeemed – The psalmist acknowledges that it is God who has redeemed his soul. Redemption in the Bible means being bought back or rescued from sin, bondage, or the power of the enemy. He recognizes that his soul has been saved by God, the ultimate source of redemption and deliverance.

Application to Our Lives

Gratitude for God’s Redemption – Like the psalmist (or David), we should give thanks for the redemption we have in Jesus Christ, who provides salvation and forgiveness for our sins, giving us a reason to rejoice.

Rejoicing in Worship – When we recognize and appreciate God’s redemption, it should lead us to sing and praise Him, making worship an expression of our joy.

Confidence in God’s Deliverance – The psalmist’s confidence in God’s faithfulness is evident. Even in difficult times we can find hope and joy in the knowledge that God has redeemed our souls and is with us.

Ephesians 1:7 (KJV): “In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace.”
