“I will also praise thee with the psaltery, even thy truth, O my God: unto thee will I sing with the harp, O thou Holy One of Israel.”

Psalm 71:22 (KJV) says:“I will also praise thee with the psaltery, even thy truth, O my God: unto thee will I sing with the harp, O thou Holy One of Israel.”

Context:Psalm 71 is attributed to David and is a prayer of trust and dependence on God in times of trouble. The psalmist seeks God’s deliverance from enemies and expresses his confidence in God’s faithfulness.

Praise and Worship:The verse begins with the psalmist declaring his intention to praise God. Praise is an act of expressing adoration, gratitude, and honour towards God. It is an acknowledgment of His greatness, goodness, and faithfulness. The psalmist uses two musical instruments, the psaltery and the harp, to praise God. These instruments were commonly used in worship and are symbolic of joyful and heartfelt worship.

The Truth of God:The psalmist specifies that he will praise God with “thy truth.” Here, truth refers to God’s faithfulness, reliability, and trustworthiness. It represents God’s unchanging nature and His faithfulness to fulfil His promises. The psalmist acknowledges that God’s truth is worthy of praise, and it becomes a central theme in his worship.

Personal Relationship with God:The psalmist addresses God as “O my God” and “O thou Holy One of Israel.” These expressions reveal a personal and intimate relationship with God. The psalmist recognizes God as his own God, emphasizing a sense of closeness and reliance on Him. Referring to God as the “Holy One of Israel” highlights His uniqueness, holiness, and authority.

  • Application:This verse encourages believers to cultivate a lifestyle of praise and worship, expressing gratitude and adoration to God. It reminds us to focus on God’s faithfulness and truth as we offer our worship. Additionally, the verse highlights the importance of a personal relationship with God, recognizing Him as our own God and acknowledging His holiness.
