Hosea 6:3
“Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the LORD: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.”
Historical Context:The book of Hosea was written by the prophet Hosea during a time of spiritual decline and idolatry in Israel. The prophet’s message focuses on the unfaithfulness of Israel to God and the consequences they would face as a result. In this particular verse, Hosea speaks of the hope of restoration and the conditions for knowing the Lord.
Seeking to Know the Lord:The verse begins by stating, “Then shall we know if we follow on to know the LORD.” This implies that true knowledge of God comes through actively seeking Him. It requires a genuine pursuit of a personal relationship with Him. This pursuit involves studying His Word, spending time in prayer, and living in obedience to His commandments.
God’s Faithfulness:The verse continues by describing God’s faithfulness and the certainty of His presence. It says, “His going forth is prepared as the morning.” This phrase suggests that just as the morning comes without fail, God’s actions and plans are certain and reliable. God is faithful in His promises and His dealings with His people.
Refreshing Rain:The verse further states, “He shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.” Rain in the ancient agricultural society was essential for a bountiful harvest. Similarly, God’s presence and blessing are portrayed as the refreshing rain that nourishes and revives His people. The reference to the latter and former rain indicates abundant provision and blessings.
Spiritual Revival and Restoration:The verse implies that when God’s people actively seek to know Him, acknowledging their need for Him, He responds with restoration and renewal. It is a call to repentance and turning back to God. Through this seeking and turning, spiritual revival and restoration occur, bringing about blessings and the knowledge of God.
Application:Hosea 6:3 encourages believers to earnestly seek the Lord, to be persistent in their pursuit of Him, and to understand that He is faithful. It reminds us that true knowledge of God comes through a genuine relationship with Him, and that He responds to those who seek Him with repentant hearts. Just as the rain brings life and growth, God’s presence in our lives brings spiritual vitality, fruitfulness, and blessings.
- In Conclusion:Hosea 6:3 emphasizes the importance of actively seeking and pursuing a personal relationship with God. It highlights God’s faithfulness, His certain presence, and the blessings that come from knowing Him. The verse encourages repentance, spiritual revival, and the restoration that follows.
