Psalms 72:10
The kings of Tarshish and of the isles shall bring presents: the kings of Sheba and Seba shall offer gifts.
Psalms 72:10 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 72 is a royal psalm, traditionally attributed to Solomon, and it prays for a king who rules with justice and righteousness. Verse 10 belongs to a larger passage (Psalm 72:8-11) that describes the king’s dominion from sea to sea and the response of distant nations to his authority.
Meaning
Tarshish was a distant seafaring region, possibly in modern-day Spain or along the Mediterranean coast. The “isles” or coastlands refer to islands and coastal regions. Sheba and Seba were wealthy regions in Arabia and Africa, known for trade and resources. The Hebrew word for “presents” (minchah) means tribute or offering, indicating homage and submission. These kings bring gifts voluntarily, not under force, showing their willing recognition of the king’s greatness.
Biblical connections
This verse echoes the wealth and fame of Solomon’s reign, when foreign rulers brought gifts, as recorded in 1 Kings 4:21 and 10:1-13, and 2 Chronicles 9:21-24. The mention of Tarshish and Sheba represents the farthest reaches of the known world, emphasizing the global scope of the king’s rule. This foreshadows the gospel age when people from every nation will worship Christ. The verse is often understood messianically, pointing to the universal reign of Christ, where all nations will acknowledge His authority and bring Him honor.
Application
Psalm 72:10 reminds us of the universal kingship of Jesus Christ. People from every corner of the earth, regardless of location or status, will come before Him with offerings. It calls us to acknowledge Jesus as our Lord and King, to worship Him, and to present our lives as offerings to Him. The willing tribute of these kings challenges us to give ourselves freely to God, not out of compulsion but out of love and reverence.
Reflection
Consider the scope of Christ’s reign. No nation or people is beyond His reach. The gifts of the kings symbolize the honor due to Him. As you read this verse, ask yourself: do you bring your best to Jesus? Do you recognize His rightful rule over every part of your life? Let this verse inspire a heart of worship and generous giving to the King of kings.
