Psalms 72:9
They that dwell in the wilderness shall bow before him; and his enemies shall lick the dust.
Psalms 72:9 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 72 is a royal psalm, likely written for King Solomon, but it looks beyond any earthly king to the perfect reign of the Messiah, Jesus Christ. The psalm prays for a ruler who brings justice, peace, and blessing to all people. Verse 9 describes the farthest reach of that reign, showing that even the most remote and hostile peoples will submit to this King.
Meaning
“They that dwell in the wilderness” refers to nomadic tribes living in desert regions, far from cities and often hostile to Israel. Their bowing means they willingly honor the King. This shows that no one is beyond His authority, even those who seem remote or unimportant. “His enemies shall lick the dust” is a vivid oriental metaphor for total defeat and humiliation, picturing enemies prostrate on the ground, their faces in the dust. This is not just defeat; it is utter surrender.
Biblical connections
The dust also recalls the curse of Genesis 3:14, where God tells the serpent that it will eat dust all its life. That curse points to the final defeat of evil, linking the serpent’s ultimate doom with the Messiah’s victory. When Christ returns, every enemy of God will be subdued, just as the serpent was judged. This verse promises that the Messiah’s victory will be complete and universal, emphasizing that no one is beyond His reach.
Application
Christ’s authority reaches every nation and every person, including those the world overlooks. No one is beyond His love or His rule.
We can bow to Christ willingly now, acknowledging Him as Lord. If we refuse, we will face the humiliation of being conquered as His enemy.
God’s justice will prevail. Every proud and rebellious power will be brought low, and righteousness will triumph.
Through His death and resurrection, Jesus has already won the victory over sin and death. We can trust in His ultimate triumph and worship Him with joy.
Reflection
This verse calls us to examine our own hearts. Do we bow to Christ in humble faith, or do we resist His rule? The choice is clear: we can submit willingly and receive His peace, or we can stand against Him and face defeat. Today, let us choose to honor Him as King, knowing that His reign brings true blessing to all who surrender to Him.
