Psalms 73:6

Posted on 18 May at 15:15

“Therefore pride compasseth them about as a chain; violence covereth them as a garment.”

Psalm 73 is a contemplative psalm attributed to Asaph, one of the chief musicians appointed by David. It explores the issue of the apparent prosperity and success of the wicked, contrasting it with the struggles and challenges faced by the righteous. This particular verse, Psalm 73:6, provides vivid imagery to describe the behavior and attitude of the wicked.

The verse begins with the phrase, “Therefore pride compasseth them about as a chain.” Here, the psalmist observes that pride envelops the wicked like a chain. This imagery implies that pride has tightly bound them, restricting their freedom and leading them astray. It suggests that the wicked are driven by a sense of arrogance, self-importance, and a distorted view of their own abilities. This pride often blinds them to the consequences of their actions and alienates them from God.

The verse continues by stating, “violence covereth them as a garment.” Here, the psalmist highlights the wicked’s association with violence. Just as a garment covers a person, violence seems to surround and clothe the wicked. This imagery conveys the idea that violence has become an integral part of their character and lifestyle. It implies that they engage in oppressive, aggressive, and unjust behaviour, causing harm to others without remorse.

Overall, this verse underscores the observation made by the psalmist that the wicked appear to thrive and enjoy prosperity despite their prideful and violent ways. The psalmist is grappling with the apparent unfairness of this situation and questioning God’s justice. However, as we continue reading the psalm, we find that the psalmist gains insight and understanding as he turns his focus toward God’s ultimate judgment and the eternal destiny of the wicked.

The message of this verse serves as a reminder to the readers that even though the wicked may seem to prosper temporarily, their pride and violence will ultimately lead to their downfall. It calls for the righteous to trust in God’s justice and have faith that He will ultimately bring justice and judgment upon the wicked.

As you study this verse further, it may be beneficial to read the entire Psalm 73 to gain a deeper understanding of the psalmist’s struggle and the lessons he learns through his contemplation.
