Psalms 73:12

Posted on 18 May at 15:15

“Behold, these are the ungodly, who prosper in the world; they increase in riches.”

Certainly! Here is a Bible study on Psalm 73:12 (KJV):

Psalm 73:12 (KJV) says, “Behold, these are the ungodly, who prosper in the world; they increase in riches.”

1. Context:

Context:Psalm 73 is attributed to Asaph, one of the chief musicians appointed by David. This psalm is a reflection on the apparent prosperity of the wicked and the internal struggle of the psalmist as he grapples with this reality.

2. Observations:

– The psalmist begins by acknowledging the prosperity of the ungodly.

– The ungodly seem to thrive in the world and accumulate wealth.

– This observation raises questions about the justice and fairness of God’s dealings with His people.

3. Key Themes:

a. The Prosperity of the Wicked: The psalmist is perplexed by the fact that those who disregard God’s ways and live ungodly lives seem to prosper in the world. This theme of the apparent success of the wicked is a common theme in the book of Psalms.

b. Internal Struggle: The psalmist is deeply troubled by what he sees and experiences. He wrestles with feelings of envy and questions God’s justice.

4. Insights:

a. The Deception of Temporary Prosperity: Although the wicked may appear to prosper for a time, their wealth and success are temporary and ultimately meaningless in the grand scheme of eternity. True prosperity is found in a relationship with God.

b. The Danger of Envy: The psalmist admits to being envious of the wicked because of their prosperity. Envy can lead to discontentment and a distorted perspective on what truly matters. It is essential to guard our hearts against envy and focus on God’s goodness and faithfulness.

c. Trusting in God’s Justice: The psalmist finds solace in the sanctuary of God and gains a new perspective. He realizes that the destiny of the wicked is destruction, and God will ultimately judge them. Trusting in God’s justice helps the psalmist to find peace and contentment.

5. Application:

a. Focus on Eternal Values: The psalmist’s struggle reminds us to prioritize eternal values over temporary wealth or success. True prosperity lies in a relationship with God, living a righteous life, and investing in things that have eternal significance.

b. Guard Against Envy: Envy can distort our perception and lead us away from God’s plan for our lives. Instead of being envious of the apparent success of the wicked, we should seek contentment in God and trust His timing and provision.

c. Trust in God’s Justice: Even when we don’t understand why the wicked prosper, we can trust that God is just and will ultimately bring about justice. Let us find comfort in the fact that God sees everything and that the destiny of the wicked is in His hands.
