Psalms 73:23

Posted on 18 May at 15:15

“Psalms 73:23 (KJV): Nevertheless I am continually with thee: thou hast holden me by my right hand.”

Context and Background:Psalms 73 is attributed to Asaph, one of the chief musicians during the reign of King David. This psalm is classified as a wisdom psalm, reflecting on the apparent prosperity of the wicked and the righteous struggle with doubt and envy. The psalmist wrestles with these thoughts but ultimately finds solace and understanding in the presence and guidance of God.

“Nevertheless I am continually with thee”:In this verse, the psalmist declares his unchanging relationship with God. Despite the doubts and struggles he faces, he acknowledges that he remains continually in the presence of God. This statement reflects the psalmist’s faith and assurance in God’s faithfulness and constant companionship.

“Thou hast holden me by my right hand”:The psalmist further emphasizes the intimate relationship he has with God by using the imagery of God holding his right hand. The right hand symbolises strength, support, and guidance. By acknowledging God’s hand holding his own, the psalmist expresses his trust in God’s leading and protection. It conveys a sense of security and assurance that God is walking alongside him, providing guidance and strength.

Application and Lessons:a. Trust in God’s presence: Like the psalmist, we may face moments of doubt, confusion, and envy when we observe the apparent prosperity of the wicked. However, we can find solace and reassurance in knowing that God is continually with us. We can trust in His presence even when circumstances seem challenging or unfair.

b. God’s guiding hand: Just as the psalmist recognises God’s hand holding his own, we can also rely on God’s guidance. He is ready to lead us through life’s journey, providing strength, wisdom, and direction. By trusting in God’s leading, we can navigate through difficult times with confidence.

c. Faith in God’s faithfulness: The psalmist’s declaration reflects a deep faith in God’s faithfulness. Despite the struggles and doubts he faces, he remains steadfast in his belief that God is with him. We can learn from this and develop a similar unwavering faith, knowing that God is always by our side, regardless of our circumstances.

d. Seek God’s presence: To experience the continual presence of God, it is essential to cultivate a close relationship with Him through prayer, studying His Word, and seeking His will. By actively seeking God’s presence, we position ourselves to experience His guidance and comforting presence in our lives.

In conclusion, Psalms 73:23 reminds us of the unchanging presence of God in our lives. It encourages us to trust in His constant companionship, to rely on His guiding hand, and to have faith in His faithfulness. May we seek to cultivate a deeper relationship with God and find comfort in knowing that He is continually with us, holding us by our right hand.
