Psalms 74:12
For God is my King of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth.
Psalms 74:12 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 74 is a community lament, a song of sorrow from the people of Israel. The psalmist, Asaph, cries out because the temple in Jerusalem has been destroyed and the city lies in ruins. In the middle of this grief, verse 12 turns from complaint to confidence. The Hebrew word translated as “For” can also mean “But” or “Verily,” showing a deliberate shift. The psalmist fixes his eyes on God, who has not changed even when everything else has fallen.
Meaning
The verse declares, “God is my King of old.” This is a personal confession, not just a general truth. The phrase “of old” means God has been King from ancient times, even from everlasting. His rule is not new or temporary; it reaches back before creation and continues forever. The second part says God is “working salvation in the midst of the earth.” This means God actively performs acts of rescue and deliverance here on earth, not only in heaven. He is not distant or unconcerned. Even when the temple lies broken, God is still at work, bringing salvation to His people.
Biblical connections
This verse echoes the church’s comfort in the worst of times: Zion’s King reigns. Throughout the Psalms, God’s kingship is a source of hope (Psalm 47:7-8). The same God who delivered Israel from Egypt continues to save His people in every generation. His kingly power is exercised for the good of His church in all ages.
Application
When we face personal or national distress, we can follow the psalmist’s example. First, acknowledge God’s sovereignty: He is King over all things, and we submit to His authority. Second, trust in His salvation: even when circumstances look hopeless, God is working deliverance. Third, seek His involvement: pray for His intervention in your life and in the world, knowing He is actively bringing about good.
Reflection
God’s salvation is not limited to one place or people. It reaches to every corner of the earth, to all who call on Him. This verse reminds us that God’s kingship is eternal and His saving work is present. In the midst of chaos, we can rest in the truth that our King is at work, and His purposes will stand.
