O God, how long shall the aduersarie reproach? shall the enemie blaspheme thy Name for euer? Psalms 74:10 (KJV)

Let’s delve into a Bible study on Psalm 74:10 in the King James Version. Psalm 74 is a lamentation psalm attributed to Asaph, a skilled musician and one of David’s chief musicians (1 Chronicles 16:5). It is a prayerful plea to God for deliverance and restoration in a time of national distress. In verse 10, the psalmist cries out: “O God, how long shall the adversary reproach? shall the enemy blaspheme thy name for ever?”

The psalmist acknowledges the existence of an adversary, an enemy, who reproaches and blasphemes the name of God. This could refer to the earthly enemies of Israel who had triumphed over them or to spiritual foes that seek to undermine God’s purposes. The psalmist is troubled by the ongoing mockery and insults directed toward God.

He expresses concern about the blasphemy directed at God’s name. Blasphemy denotes irreverent or disrespectful speech or actions toward God and it undermines His holiness and authority. Grieved by the enemy’s audacity to insult God’s name, the psalmist seeks divine intervention.

The verse forms part of a larger prayer for God’s intervention and deliverance. The cry, “O God, how long shall…?” reveals a deep longing for God to act and bring an end to the reproach and blasphemy. The psalmist desires the restoration of God’s honor and the vindication of His name.

Psalm 74:10 prompts us to reflect on the state of our own lives and the world around us. We may encounter moments when it seems that God’s name is being reproached and His honor compromised. In such situations we can turn to God in prayer, seeking His deliverance and restoration.

This verse also highlights the importance of revering God’s name and being mindful of our speech and actions toward Him. As believers we should strive to honor and respect God’s name, both in our personal lives and in our interactions with others.

Ultimately, Psalm 74:10 reminds us of our need for God’s intervention and the hope we have in Him to bring about deliverance, restore honor, and silence the reproach against His name.
