“And forgot his works, and his wonders that he had shewed them.”

Psalm 78:11 (KJV) says: And forgot his works, and his wonders that he had shewed them.

Historical Context:Psalm 78 is attributed to Asaph, one of the chief musicians during the reign of King David. This psalm serves as a reminder to the people of Israel about God’s faithfulness throughout their history, highlighting both the blessings they received and their tendency to forget God’s works.

The Sin of Forgetting:In verse 11, the psalmist reflects on a specific fault of the Israelites-they forgot God’s works and wonders. Despite witnessing numerous miracles and experiencing God’s deliverance, the Israelites failed to remember and acknowledge God’s intervention in their lives. This forgetfulness led them to repeat their mistakes and fall into sin.

Importance of Remembering:The psalmist emphasises the importance of remembering God’s works and wonders. Remembering enables the people to learn from the past and remain faithful to God’s commandments. By remembering God’s faithfulness, they can draw strength, trust, and hope in difficult times, knowing that God has always been with them.

Learning from History:Throughout Psalm 78, the psalmist recounts the historical events of Israel’s journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. By revisiting these events, the psalmist aims to teach future generations about God’s faithfulness and the consequences of forgetting Him. The psalm serves as a cautionary tale, reminding the people not to repeat the mistakes of their ancestors.

Application to Our Lives:As believers today, we can learn from the Israelites’ tendency to forget God’s works and apply the lesson to our own lives. It is crucial to intentionally remember God’s faithfulness in our personal journeys. We can do this by regularly reading and studying the Scriptures, meditating on God’s promises, and sharing testimonies of His faithfulness with one another.

Gratitude and Worship:Psalm 78 encourages us to cultivate a heart of gratitude and worship towards God. By remembering His works and wonders, we can respond in awe, thanksgiving, and praise. When we acknowledge and appreciate God’s faithfulness, it deepens our relationship with Him and strengthens our faith.
