Psalms 78:10

Listen to this article

“They kept not the covenant of God, and refused to walk in his law.”

Context:This verse is part of Psalm 78, which is a long psalm attributed to Asaph. The psalm serves as a historical reflection on the faithfulness of God and the unfaithfulness of the Israelites throughout their history.

In verse 10, the psalmist focuses on a specific aspect of Israel’s unfaithfulness: their failure to keep the covenant of God and their refusal to walk in His law. This highlights the disobedience and rebellion of the Israelites in their relationship with God.

The “covenant of God” refers to the covenant established between God and Israel, particularly the Mosaic Covenant that was given to them through Moses at Mount Sinai (Exodus 19-24). This covenant outlined the terms of their relationship with God, including the Ten Commandments and various laws and statutes.

The phrase “refused to walk in his law” suggests that the Israelites rejected God’s instructions and chose to live according to their own desires and ways instead of aligning themselves with God’s will. This disobedience to God’s law resulted in negative consequences for the Israelites throughout their history.

The psalmist brings up this point to remind future generations of the importance of remaining faithful to God’s covenant and following His commandments. The psalm goes on to recount various instances of Israel’s rebellion and God’s faithfulness, emphasizing the need for future generations to learn from the past and remain obedient to God.

Overall, Psalms 78:10 serves as a reminder of the consequences of disobeying God’s covenant and the significance of walking in obedience to His law. It highlights the importance of faithfulness and the potential pitfalls of turning away from God’s guidance and instructions.
