Psalms 79:6

Posted on 18 May at 15:15
Listen to this article

“Pour out thy wrath upon the heathen that have not known thee, and upon the kingdoms that have not called upon thy name.”

Psalm 79:6 (KJV):Pour out thy wrath upon the heathen that have not known thee, and upon the kingdoms that have not called upon thy name.

Historical Context:Psalm 79 is attributed to Asaph and is considered a communal lament. It was likely written during or after the Babylonian exile when Jerusalem and its temple were destroyed. The psalmist expresses grief and a plea for God’s intervention in the face of the devastation caused by foreign invaders.

  • Understanding the Verse:

In Psalm 79:6, the psalmist is petitioning God to pour out His wrath upon the heathen nations and kingdoms that do not know Him or acknowledge His name. This request reflects the psalmist’s desire for divine justice and retribution against those who have oppressed God’s people.

Divine Wrath and Judgment:The concept of God’s wrath appears throughout the Bible, often associated with His righteous judgment against sin and wickedness. In this verse, the psalmist calls for God’s wrath to be poured out upon the heathen nations and kingdoms who have not acknowledged Him. This implies a plea for God to intervene and bring justice against those who have opposed His people and desecrated His holy city.

The Context of God’s Covenant:The psalmist’s plea aligns with the covenant relationship between God and the Israelites. The Israelites were chosen by God to be His people, and part of their covenant obligation was to worship and acknowledge Him alone. The psalmist, therefore, prays for God’s judgment upon the nations that have disregarded this covenant by attacking Jerusalem and its people.

A Call for Divine Intervention:The psalmist’s prayer is not motivated by personal vengeance but by a longing for God’s justice to be established in the world. It is an appeal for God to manifest His power and intervene on behalf of His people. The psalmist recognizes that only God can bring about true justice and deliverance from their enemies.

Application:

  • While Psalm 79:6 was originally written in a specific historical context, it can still teach us important lessons today. As believers, we can turn to this verse as a reminder to pray for justice and deliverance when we face opposition or injustice. However, it is essential to balance this with the teachings of Jesus, who calls us to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us (Matthew 5:44). We can seek God’s justice while also displaying His love and forgiveness to all people.

In summary, Psalm 79:6 expresses a plea for God’s wrath to be poured out upon the nations that have oppressed God’s people and disregarded His name. It highlights the desire for divine justice and retribution, rooted in the historical context of the Babylonian exile. As we reflect on this verse, we can pray for God’s justice in the face of adversity, while also embodying the teachings of Christ in extending love and forgiveness to all.
