Psalms 81:7

Thou calledst in trouble, and I deliuered thee, I answered thee in the secret place of thunder: I proued thee at the waters of Meribah. Selah. Psalms 81:7 (KJV)

Psalm 81 was composed by Asaph, one of David’s chief musicians, and it stands as a psalm of praise and thanksgiving to God. Verse 7 looks back to a formative episode in Israel’s history, recalling how God responded to His people in moments of distress.

The verse opens with God’s call to His people in their trouble, a reference to the Israelites’ bondage in Egypt and their desperate cry for deliverance. According to the psalmist, God heard that cry, answered their prayers, and brought about their rescue through the miraculous events of the Exodus.

It then mentions that God answered “in the secret place of thunder.” This phrase evokes a powerful, awe‑inspiring manifestation of God’s presence and voice. Many readers associate it with the dramatic theophany at Mount Sinai, where thunder, lightning, and the giving of the Ten Commandments revealed God’s majesty.

The concluding image is the testing at the waters of Meribah. The psalmist recalls an incident during the wilderness journey when the people complained of a lack of water. In one account God instructed Moses to strike a rock, producing water for the thirsty (Exodus 17:1‑7); another tradition records a similar event recorded in Numbers 20:1‑13. Both episodes highlight the Israelites’ dependence on God and His provision for their needs.

The word “Selah” that ends the verse is a musical term found throughout the Psalms, thought to signal a pause or a musical interlude, inviting the listener to reflect on the words just spoken.

Overall, Psalm 81:7 reminds believers of God’s faithfulness in answering prayers and delivering His people from trouble. It emphasizes His power and presence as demonstrated in historic acts of salvation and provision, and it calls each reader to pause, contemplate God’s goodness, and remember His steadfast faithfulness in their own lives.
