Psalms 81:7

Thou calledst in trouble, and I delivered thee; I answered thee in the secret place of thunder: I proved thee at the waters of Meribah. Selah.

Psalms 81:7 (KJV)

Psalm 81 comes from Asaph, one of David’s chief musicians. Verse 7 looks back to a key moment in Israel’s history, when God responded to His people in distress.

The verse opens with God speaking. He reminds Israel that when they called out in trouble, He delivered them. This points to their bondage in Egypt and their desperate cry for rescue. God heard that cry and brought them out through the Exodus.

The phrase “secret place of thunder” suggests a powerful, awe-inspiring display of God’s presence and voice. It may refer to the thunder and lightning of the plagues on Egypt, or to His majestic appearance at Mount Sinai. Either way, it shows that God answered in a way that inspired fear and wonder.

The testing at the waters of Meribah recalls the wilderness journey. At Rephidim, the people complained about having no water, and God told Moses to strike a rock to bring forth water (Exodus 17:1-7). A similar event is recorded in Numbers 20:1-13. Both accounts show Israel’s dependence on God and His faithful provision.

The word “Selah” is a musical term found throughout the Psalms. It likely signals a pause or interlude, inviting the listener to reflect on what has just been said.

This verse connects God’s past deliverance with His testing of His people. He not only rescued them but also proved their faith through trials. The same pattern appears in the New Testament, where God’s faithfulness in the past encourages present trust (1 Corinthians 10:1-4).

Psalm 81:7 reminds believers that God is faithful to answer prayer and deliver from trouble. His power and presence are seen in historic acts of salvation and provision. When we face difficulties, we can remember how God has helped before and trust Him again.

Take time to pause, as Selah suggests. Think about God’s goodness and His steadfast faithfulness in your own life. Let the memory of His past help strengthen your faith for today.
