Psalms 83:5

For they have consulted together with one consent: they are confederate against thee:

Psalms 83:5 (KJV)

Psalm 83 is a prayer of Asaph, a leader of worship in Israel. The nation faced a serious threat from surrounding peoples who wanted to destroy it. The psalm begins with a cry for God to act, and verse 5 describes the unity of those enemies.

The words “consulted together” mean the enemies planned as one. They did not act by chance or in confusion. Their purpose was deliberate and shared. “With one consent” shows that they agreed completely in their hatred and their goal. The Hebrew word behind this phrase can mean “heart,” so their unity was not just outward but came from a common inner resolve.

The phrase “confederate against thee” means they made a covenant or alliance. Their target was not only Israel but God Himself. They opposed His chosen people, and so they opposed His purposes. The verse makes clear that their plot was against the Lord, not merely against a human nation.

This unity in evil appears elsewhere in Scripture. In Psalm 2:2, rulers take counsel together against the Lord and His anointed. Here, the enemies form a covenant, just as rulers do in that psalm. The connection shows that human opposition to God often takes the form of coordinated plans. Yet the Bible also teaches that such plans cannot succeed against God’s will.

Believers may face opposition that seems strong and well organized. This verse reminds us that we can bring such threats to God in prayer, as Asaph did. We should not be surprised when evil forces unite against righteousness. Their unity is real, but it is not greater than God’s power.

We also learn to examine our own unity. The enemies were united for a wrong purpose. Christians are called to be united for good, in love and truth. Our agreement should be built on God’s Word, not on shared anger or pride.

When you see people join together against what is right, remember that God sees their plans. He is not silent or inactive. Trust Him to defend His people and to bring justice in His time.
