Psalms 84:9

Behold, O God our shield: and looke vpon the face of thine anointed. Psalms 84:9 (KJV)

Psalm 84 is a psalm of longing for the presence of God. It was composed by the sons of Korah, who served as temple singers. The psalm expresses a deep desire to dwell in God’s house and describes the blessings that flow from living in His very presence.

The opening appeal, “Behold, O God our shield,” addresses God as a shield. Scripture frequently portrays God as a protective shield, offering refuge and safety to His people. By calling God “our shield,” the psalmist acknowledges Him as defender and guardian who guards lives, shields the faithful from the attacks of the enemy, and preserves them from harm.

The second petition, “and look upon the face of thine anointed,” asks God to turn His attention to the one He has set apart. In the Old Testament the term “anointed” (Hebrew mashiyach) refers to individuals specially appointed for service to God—kings, priests, and prophets. The verse therefore carries two related possibilities. It may refer to the Davidic king, the earthly representative of God, requesting divine favor, blessing, wisdom, and guidance for his reign. It may also be understood more broadly as a plea on behalf of the psalmist and the people of Israel, who see themselves as God’s chosen and anointed community, seeking His favor, attention, and recognition of their devotion.

Overall, the verse encapsulates a heartfelt plea for God’s protection and favor, and a yearning that He would look kindly upon His anointed—whether king or people—so that they might experience His presence and blessings in the sanctuary of His house.
