Psalms 84:9

Behold, O God our shield, and look upon the face of thine anointed.

Context

Psalm 84 is a song of deep longing for God’s presence. The sons of Korah, who served as temple singers, composed it. The psalm describes the joy of dwelling in God’s house and the blessings that come from being near Him.

Meaning

The prayer “Behold, O God our shield” calls God a shield. Scripture often pictures God as a protective shield, offering refuge and safety. By saying “our shield,” the psalmist confesses that God defends His people and guards them from harm.

The second plea, “look upon the face of thine anointed,” asks God to show favor to the one He has set apart. In the Old Testament, “anointed” (Hebrew mashiyach) describes people specially chosen for service, such as kings, priests, and prophets. Here it likely refers to the Davidic king, the earthly leader of Israel, who needed divine wisdom and blessing. Some translations render “anointed” as “Christ,” pointing to Jesus, the Messiah. In Him, all believers are also anointed by God (2 Corinthians 1:21).
