They go from strength to strength,

every one of them in Zion appeareth before God. Psalms 84:7 (KJV)

The book of Psalms is a collection of poetic expressions of worship, praise, thanksgiving, and lament. Psalm 84 is attributed to the sons of Korah and is a song of longing for the presence of God in His sanctuary. It expresses the deep desire to be in the house of God and highlights the blessings of dwelling in His presence.

They go from strength to strength: This phrase suggests a progression or advancement from one level of strength to another. It implies that those who seek after God and dwell in His presence experience spiritual growth and renewal. As they continue to draw near to God, their spiritual strength and vitality increase. It is a reminder that the journey of faith is not stagnant but dynamic, with opportunities for continuous growth and transformation.

Zion refers to the hill on which the city of Jerusalem was built and, in a broader sense, symbolizes the presence of God. The phrase “appeareth before God in Zion” implies that those who are dedicated to seeking God and dwelling in His presence have the privilege of standing before Him in His holy place. The phrase refers to those who are present in God’s holy assembly. In biblical usage, the “court of the LORD” often denotes the sanctuary in Zion, symbolizing God’s presence.

Progression in faith: As believers, we should strive to go from strength to strength in our spiritual journey. This involves actively seeking God, spending time in prayer, studying His Word, and engaging in spiritual disciplines. By consistently seeking God, we can experience growth, maturity, and an increased understanding of His ways.

Dwelling in God’s presence: Just as the psalmist longed to dwell in the house of God, we should desire to dwell in His presence. This can be cultivated through regular times of worship, praise, and personal communion with God. When we prioritize seeking God’s presence, we open ourselves up to encounter His love, guidance, and transformation.

The privilege of approaching God: Through Jesus Christ, we have the privilege of approaching God and standing before Him. As believers, we are invited to enter into His presence, not just in physical locations like Zion but in our hearts and lives. We can approach God confidently, knowing that He welcomes us with open arms and desires a relationship with us.

In summary, Psalm 84:7 reminds us of the progressive nature of our faith journey and the blessings of dwelling in God’s presence. It encourages us to seek God continually, knowing that He strengthens us and allows us to stand before Him in worship and communion. May we strive to go from strength to strength as we walk with God, desiring His presence above all else.
