Psalms 84:10

Listen to this article

“For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.”

Context:Psalm 84 is attributed to the Sons of Korah and is a psalm of longing for the presence of God. It expresses the deep desire to be in God’s presence and the joy that comes from worshiping Him.

The psalmist declares that one day in God’s courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. This verse emphasizes the immense worth and delight found in being in the presence of God. The psalmist recognizes that being near to God is far superior to any other experience or dwelling place on earth.

The psalmist highlights the stark contrast between being a doorkeeper in the house of God and dwelling in the tents of wickedness. A doorkeeper was considered the lowest position of service in the temple, yet the psalmist views it as preferable to living among the wicked. This shows the psalmist’s longing for even the humblest role in the presence of God rather than being associated with evil.

The psalmist’s declaration reveals a deep hunger for God’s presence. The psalmist understands that being close to God brings fulfillment, joy, and blessings beyond measure. It reflects a heart that values spiritual things more than earthly possessions or positions.

The psalmist expresses a clear preference for being in God’s presence over anything the world can offer. This verse challenges us to examine our own hearts and priorities. Do we prioritise seeking God’s presence above all else? Are we willing to trade worldly allurements for the opportunity to dwell in God’s house?

Psalm 84:10 encourages us to cultivate a strong desire for God’s presence in our lives. It reminds us that no worldly pursuit or position can compare to the joy, peace, and blessings found in a relationship with God. We should strive to spend time in God’s presence through prayer, worship, studying His Word, and seeking fellowship with other believers.
