Listen to this article

“For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee.”

Context:Psalm 86 is a prayer of David, seeking God’s protection and guidance. In this particular verse, David acknowledges the goodness, forgiveness, and abundant mercy of the Lord.

The Goodness of God: David begins by recognizing the inherent goodness of the Lord. God’s goodness refers to His moral excellence, righteousness, and kindness. Throughout the Bible, we find numerous accounts of God’s goodness towards His people. His goodness is demonstrated through His acts of love, compassion, and provision.

Readiness to Forgive: David further acknowledges that God is ready to forgive. This reveals God’s willingness to pardon those who genuinely repent and turn to Him. God’s forgiveness is an essential aspect of His character. He is patient and compassionate, always extending grace to those who seek it.

Plenteous in Mercy: David recognizes that God’s mercy is abundant. God’s mercy refers to His compassion and kindness toward those who are in need or have fallen short. His mercy is not limited or scarce but overflowing. It is available to all who humbly seek Him, regardless of their past failures or mistakes.

All Who Call Upon Him: The verse concludes by emphasizing that God’s mercy is extended to all who call upon Him. It emphasizes the inclusivity of God’s mercy, as it is not limited to a specific group of people but is available to anyone who earnestly seeks Him in faith.

Application: Psalm 86:5 teaches us several important lessons. First, it reminds us of the goodness of God, affirming His character as one of righteousness and kindness. Second, it encourages us to approach God with repentant hearts, knowing that He is always ready to forgive. Third, it reminds us that God’s mercy is abundant and available to all who sincerely call upon Him. As believers, we can find comfort and hope in this verse, knowing that God’s love, forgiveness, and mercy are always accessible to us.
