Listen to this article

“Give ear, O LORD, unto my prayer; and attend to the voice of my supplications.”

Context:The Book of Psalms is a collection of poetic prayers and songs attributed to King David and other authors. Psalm 86 is specifically ascribed to David and is classified as a prayer of intercession, where the psalmist appeals to God for help and guidance in times of trouble.

Prayer and Supplication:The verse begins with a plea for God to “give ear” or listen attentively to the prayer being offered. It acknowledges God’s ability to hear and respond to the petitions of His people. The psalmist emphasizes the earnestness of their request by referring to it as a “supplication,” which signifies a humble plea for assistance or mercy.

Recognition of God’s Authority:By addressing God as “LORD” (in capital letters in the KJV), the psalmist acknowledges God’s sovereign power and authority. It reflects a posture of reverence and submission before the Almighty.

Openness and Vulnerability:The psalmist expresses a desire for God’s attentive presence, asking Him to “attend to the voice of my supplications.” This reveals an openness and vulnerability in approaching God, demonstrating a genuine need for His involvement and intervention. It reflects a deep trust in God’s ability to hear and respond to the cries of His people.

Application:Psalm 86:6 serves as an encouragement for believers to bring their prayers and supplications before the Lord. It reminds us to approach God with sincerity, humility, and a recognition of His authority. It assures us that God is attentive to the cries of His people and is willing to listen to our heartfelt pleas for help and guidance.

Remember to explore the entire Psalm 86 for further insights and to gain a deeper understanding of the psalmist’s heart and the context in which this verse is situated.
